Same problem here. I can reproduce this with both VLC and Totem.
Using ~/.gvfs/ instead works great.
$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 8.04.1
Release:8.04
ii libsmbclient 3.0.28a-1ubuntu4.3
ii gvfs 0.2.4-0ubuntu
2008-04-30 15:36:42 remove libpam-smbpass 3.0.28a-1ubuntu4 3.0.28a-
1ubuntu4

When I deleted the package libpam-smbpass there were no more crashes in
cups web-gui. I'm changing the bug to Invalid but at least now other
people with the same problem can find an explanation
