no, /var/lib/ldap and /var/lib are the standard locations, not modified
at all.
the bug is also triggered if I don't delete /var/lib/ldap after having purged
slapd (in a purge/reinstall cycle):
- purge slapd / install slapd -> bug.
- purge slapd / rm -rf /var/lib/ldap / install slapd -

On a brand new Lucid installation (dist-upgraded to last version, with
slapd 2.4.21-0ubuntu5), I can't feed a new backend to slapd, it fails
with the following error :
