I'm a proxy here, but I will forward the request.
I suspect that the error happend because cancel was clicked, I uploaded
a new debconf gnome version that will not show cancel (and the window
close button) when release upgrades are in progress so I think this part
of the bug can be closed.

This happend to 'silbs' in the office, I think its not unlikely that
cancel was pressed (that results in the exit status 1 error).
