although I had to add the --debug=all flag to reproduce it on that
smaller directory. Specifically, this command never completes:

I should add that to fix this while running you need to do, as root:
echo 2 > /sys/kernel/mm/ksm/run
This makes the pages duplicate, might take a second or two and disables
KSM.

occurs on network connections for VMs, as high as 4000ms - 5000ms. The
host also reports high IO wait times.

server, and this fixed the problem - ntlm_auth now works correctly.
I've posted a comment on Samba bugzilla, confirming that the patch fixes

so, sharing does work.
however, i still think that the public folder should have SOME kind of
special property that makes it "Public". (i.e. all user accounts may
read files in the public folder of any account)

computer right now and just now i checked to see if it was working,
and it is; i can connect to the share now.
