I tried to reproduce this in Jaunty and Hardy (installing then
uninstalling mysqls-server-5.0 package) up to date and works fine for
me. Could you clean up repositories and update your sources (after that
install mysql-server-5.0, same @Mathias said).

and scripts works fine here (8.04 up to date), could you try to upgrade

I tried to reproduce this issue in Karmic up to date and openssh-server
1.5-1p1 and works fine for me. Please could you upgrade your system and

phpmyadmin can't be configured because need a msysql-server configured
and running without issues, if you see your dpkg output, you can see
that mysql-server is not correctly configured or something happened in
initscript. Did you tried to reinstall mysql or was a fresh install of
