After much hair-pulling (mostly because the documentation is sketchy at
best, partly because I'm a LDAP noob), am able to confirm that the
posted LDIF works. That said, in the process I found that there are the
two alternate schema options for ldap automount trees - one that's
apparently NIS based

Requiring libpam-cracklib is unnecessary - all that would really need to
happen is change pam-auth-update to write /etc/pam.d/common-password
with try_authtok instead of use_authtok when it's enabling ldap. (Wiser
and more experienced heads than I should test that for other issues but
