Curiously, the problem hasn't recurred in a few days. I'm crossing my
fingers here and will close this if I go a whole week without a lockout.

Thank you! I suppose a search for "debugging samba" should have
occurred to me, but that is what I was looking for. As I said, "I can't
even tell where to look for errors." So ...
