Sorry Clint,
It was on an a VM so that I just zapped it into trash and got a new VM.
Rather than moving data directory I just mounted my new directory on the

ERROR 1 (HY000): Can't create/write to file './/v.frm~' (Errcode: 2).
This is a standard installation of mysql-server. The mysql data-dir resides in

Current prerelease kernel 2.6.32-33 doesn't fix this issue for me.
This issue is restricted to AMD processors.
Falling back to 2.6.32-31 is an alternative work-around.
For me, modifying the Linux command line in our guests is an undesirable
workaround and I will be using 2.6.3
