I also have the same problem with ubuntu 8.04...
i'm able to access shares via nautilus by typing smb://machine/sharename
(but not no list the shares, although I don't think that info helps
you).
what kind of information on the server do you need Steve?

Ubuntu better. However, I am closing it because the bug has been fixed
in the latest development version of Ubuntu - the Intrepid Ibex.
Moreover, the version in hardy is 2.4.9 which has the fix included
according to Howard's mess

However, I'd suggest to always fix the permission in the init script
just after the ownership are set. It's simpler.

preferable to address this in nagios2 to reduce regression potential.

Given that the LSB patch is already upstream and available in Intrepid,
and looking at the code, it is clearly the correct "technical" solution.
However, applying this change to Hardy would affect basically every init
script in Ubuntu. This is not an SRU that would be accepted lightly.
