I would opt for the suggestion made by Jim. Let authors/editors decide
whether or not to remove the version number. During the final phase one
of us can go through the manual to check those chapters/sections that
had no author.

if it's found then contact the appropriate author/editor to check into
it? I'm going on the assumption that it wouldn't be too difficult to do

It is my opinion that both authors and editors should be looking out for
this occurrence. Authors are really the first line of defense--as they
determine if inclusion of a "13.10" reference is applicable in the section
they are authoring, and if they choose to leave a reference to "Ubuntu
13.10" in

Yes, this sounds good. This would also avoid fuzzy strings in the
translation.

I, too, agree the manual is written for the "newer" user. We target the
"new" users as a majority while recognizing we attract users who may have
played around with the previous version(s) and really want to dig into the
current version.
