Sorry for not replying. I wanted to see what others thought first.
I also think that LTS only is the best way forward. Then having a second
edition to fix issues.

it is probably because there are some commits that conflict with local
changes you have made.
It might be a good idea copy your changes elsewhere and pull a new copy of
upstream.
Then compare your changes with the new copy of upstream.

When I suggested a new features guide, I was thinking more of a guide rather

Especially if you cover how they work as well as what they are. As well as
