This comes from older releases where we had two important things in the
four corners: menus, show desktop, trash and power off button. I always
loved the power button in its

Thanks for your answer Mat.
Well, maybe if every menu item in the applet has an icon, it could
really look cluttered...
Maybe it would look better (and less cluttered) to not list all the
quit options there, but just display the classical 2 options (Quit and
Log Out) and then present the 2 beautif

Ohhh boy, third post in a row, should be in spammer blacklist soon... :)
Anyway, I found exact argument Mark made about removal of icons:
"We decided not to put icons into the menu for each of the different
statuses. Our design ethic is to aim for cleaner, less cluttered
layouts with fewer icons a
By the way, there is Mark's blog entry about this as reference on why
such decision was made:

There are two bug reports for this:
1) For removing icons in Intrepid beta cycle
https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fast-user-switch-applet/+bug/301309
2) For overal usability of FUSA in Jaunty

I suggest
No the icons were removed. Initially there were icons, but mark (or
someone else) decided to remove them

A quick look at the code reveals that the menu items added to the
applet are of the type GtkImageMenuItem. The reason stock items are
not being used is probably because the labels in stock menu items do
not contain '...'.
It is quite possible that the icons were left out by mistake.
I think it is

That is a text field, so you can edit the text. I don't know what is

Personally I also strongly second to have icons in applet menu,
because yes, turning computer off, putting into sleep, etc. are motor
actions for body and eyes and it is very hard for me to stop every
time I open that menu and read actual labels - and I am geek who pays
attention to all little deta

Elegance is not the same as usability...
Many people use icons as "orientation landmarks" and never read the menu
