Same thing on a fresh install.
After fully installing and configuring my Gutsy, the "version upgrade" button
gets lit after fetching updates in adept manager. Then, the update-manager will
fail with same error message as above.
This happens also on my second computer, after an upgrade from Feist

Office Writer also crashes when trying to open it directly, via
File|Open command.
