Also switching to tty and back (Ctrl+Alt+F2; Ctrl+Alt+F7 f.i.) sometimes
works, sometimes results in a black screen with a cursor and sometimes
results in a corrupt desktop (see screenshot) with sets compiz jumping
to 100% cpu usage. The black screen and corrupt desktop are both
completely non oper

Another thing is when I select "Log Out..." the desktop always crashes,
I get a non interactive tty which still shows information about booting
the system. I do not get the login screen.

It worked for this bug (aka this bug was submitted with chromium). However it
did not work with this bug:

If you are asking me:
Two of my machines required an aptitude clean before I could aptitude update &&
aptitude safe-upgrade.
So I'm guessing it is not just some single user fluke, and could happen to more
people...
