I think I did not see a precise error message, so, I don't know which
file was the problem. Because root fixed it, I and the bug assignee
thought it was permission related - and they closed it as bad user
handling - which is not helpfull

I had the same problem (running 1.5.0#2ubuntu6:), and by accident found
the reason
* I started firefox from eclipse running as root and shut my system down
without exiting the browser
* the problem happens, whenever you start firefox as user - not root
* to fix the problem start firefox as ro
I like your second suggestion. As of now, the user is completely blind,
because nothing hints to a security problem. Probably firefox is here
doing to much, to recover from lower level errors.
