Thanks for the response Dereck.
I added the 'Load"synaptics"' line to the module section in
xorg.conf and rebooted. Still no luck.

Hmmm...here's the output of an ls of /etc/X11/ after moving the
xorg.conf to "xorg.old":
total 104
drwxr-xr-x 10 root root 4 2008-07-03 20:08 .
drwxr-xr-x 132 root root 12 2008-07-03 20:10 ..
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4 2008-04-22 12:03 app-defaults
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4 2008-04-22 12:05 c
Here's xorg.conf under the live CD and the log file is attached:
# xorg.conf (X.Org X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the xorg.conf
Is there any significance in that I'm using "/dev/input/event7" instead
of "/dev/input/event6" (that the live CD is using)?

I installed your version and it works. I can see all my folders and

I formatted and rebuilt the system from scratch. The touchpad is back
to normal now. I don't know if we just want to call this a fluke and
close the bug or if it's something you guys are still looking into.
Either way, thanks for the help.

I confirmed a hardware issue and Dell is sending me a new module - mine
was doa. FWIW the BIOS on the 1011 has the option to enable/disable
bluetooth even if the module is removed and/or missing.
