Looks like these crashes wiped out a large portion of my mail folders.
I found many of the files in ~/evolution/mail/local are empty on disk.
Fortunately, I had not expunged for a while and was able to recover many
emails.
Backup is your friend.

This is the same as gentoo Bug 244510.
I resolved this by removing openoffice.org and libuno
apt-get remove openoffice*
locate libuno
# then remove all libuno_sal.so.3
apt-get install openoffice.org
Some other installation/removal left a stray link or file that
conflicted with libuno_sal.so.3

eog image1.jpg takes 27 seconds to open a window.
Sometimes, I get 'Failed to register: Timeout was reached' message and
eog is terminated.
This happens when I have TWM as the desktop. Wit
I have another 18.04.3 installation on this computer, on a WD5000, that
also uses TWM. The 27 second display does not happen. On that system,
I notice a difference in time for the very first execution of eog to the
next. The shared libs seem to have stayed loaded inbetween.

As suggested by kai.heng.feng, I installed the 4.12.0-041200rc2 kernel.
If I connect my WD My Passport drive into an Plugable 7-port, external
USB 3.0 hub, it is not recognized. 'sudo lsusb -v' causes the drive to
be recognized and I can mount it. If I disconnect the drive, wait a few
seconds
