Now that I told "Display Preferences" that my external monitor is to the
right side of my laptop it has worked (though physically it still is to
its left). BUT - the display is still a bit whacky and fickle, that is

Shut down the computer, cold re-boot: same orange streaky lines on
panels.
Turned off visual effects completely (system > preferences >
appearance): no more orange streak.
So I'm somewhat happy (though I would like to (have kept) keep some
visual effects... :-/ )

Yet, although the above one-year-old comment says "fix released" - I
can't see any effect or sign of a fix on my (up to date) s
IBM X41 thinkpad, ubuntu maverick meerkat default (ATI ?) drivers.
Happens RARELY, maybe 1/50 of all resume from standby operations.
Still - the only "workaround" I know of: squint and make out what's
going on to close and save and shut down cleanly; reboot.

Gee, I find this "no activity for x days -> expired" thing really
irritating and unhelpful. If I'm not a developer, how can I prevent this

open libreoffice document _via_ firefox (e.g., gmail *.xls attachment),
without saving, "just opening" (via tmp folder)
then application is still open but neither in "side bar thing" nor in
application switcher.
My workaround:
in Firefox: Ctrl J (open downloads dialogue)

If I start with AC adapter plugged in, however, everything seems to be
fine...

PEM is king.
also make sure the wpa_supplicant openssl engine is installed.
I'm pretty sure that one of the two helped solve my wlan problems with
natty at uni.
(sorry, but I think this is at least semi-relevant to this bug report :)
