I use Intreped Ibex 8.10 and I have the same problem, I think it will be
related to the ia32-sun-java6 package or the sun-java-jre package that
it depends on.

status 1' whenever i use apt, dpkg, etc. to do anything.

I can confirm that I no longer have this problem after upgrading to
Ubuntu 9.04.
