Above solution is only for a similar problem, not this problem.
New Knoppix cd has the same behaviour. Doesn't even let me install dhcpcd from
the harddisk.

It should have nothing to do with it. That is also what i would think.
But it is not what i observed. This observation was made on three
different computers with very different hardware standing in different
houses, all with either a live cd or a fresh installation of ubuntu, and
also with live cds

similar problem. Their solution is to explicitly write the mac address
of the network card into dhclient.conf .
