When I try to launch Synaptic from System -> Administration menu, gksudo
(redirected to gksu) asks for the password and after entering the
password, it still does not launch Synaptic.

I had the same issue (libnss-mdns was installed) and installing
lib32nss-mdns fixes it. (This is a yet another confirmation). :)

I installed Edgy Eft on a SATA drive, which is the only drive on the
system. I manually partitioned the disk. When /boot/grub/menu.lst was
created, the root option to the kernel was given as '/dev/hda1' which is
