try alsamixer or gnome-alsamixer to see if anything is
muted.

Can't change display resolution, nothing above 800x600 in System-
Preference-Display and need 1680x1050. Fresh install to Koala. No X11 to
config xorg file to change display. (Same problem in Jaunty but editing
xorg fixed it.)
