I don't know if this a duplicate bug report as this is the one that fit
my search criteria, as for the "original report" I hope someone has
posted a solution.
I had this problem before on 8.xx and here again.
playing gnu backgammon on 8. can't remember (that's poor) this morning.
Installed 9.10 and now gnu won't even launch.

Thank you for your help, but I believe the problem now lies with x.org and my
radeon 9250 card which is no longer supported in the new x.org release bundled
with 9.10.
A wiki page with help for the lost tribe of radeon users would have been
useful, but the link for the sad 9250 users to revert b
I have traced this problem to the application-specific volume level for
Rhythmbox that Nautilus uses for the audio preview.
