I have tried several things to work around this problem by now:
* adding nomodeset to the kernel parameters in grub
* using the vesa driver instead of the intel driver
* removing xorg.conf altogether
* turning off DRI
* disabling scim
* using a different user account
None of these made a di
After a day of almost no enter key usage, I haven't had a single crash.
As soon as I actually had to use the Enter key again, the next crash
occured. I also noticed that using either the enter key or pressing
Shif+2 (to geht ") while scroll lock had turned itself on reliably

HISTCONTROL used to work on .bash_history. I liked that behaviour since it
minimised the .bash_history file's size allowing for more commands to be
remembered. (It also stopped duplicates from cluttering the file.)

I'm using Kubuntu 11.04 and am getting some really similar glitches with normal
(effects-enabled) KDE (not 100% reproducably, though). 24bpp is a really common
value for all the machines I used in the last 8 years (X has been
auto-detecting this for years). This is physical machines I'm talking
I see. That must have to do with the part I failed to understand.

It's definitely also happening in Debian (surprise, surprise...).
However, I'm not convinced anymore, that it has to do with DNS
resolution. OTOH I haven't gone to the trouble of trying to capture
network traffic when this occurs, so I can't be certain.

The issue was present up to and including maverick, at which point I did
a complete reinstall since I had previously confirmed that this would
get rid of the problem. The issue hasn't occurred for me since, even
though I seriously doubt it has been fixed in natty.

@Julian: From this bug's description, it's a regression from maverick, which
comes with 2.6.35. In the comment to bug #524281 you reference, the big
discrepancy is between 34 and 35, i.e. it should have been apparent in maverick
and not just have appeared in natty.
