Oh and I have managed to delete and replace the original file now. I used 'sudo chmod 777 /etc/apt/sources.list' - - then 'sudo rm /etc/apt/sources.list' - - Then put inplace the file I had modified to remove the shortened line 'sudo cp sources.list /etc/apt' the modded file was sat on my desktop.

Fresh install. New hard drive. Made from fiesty distro CD then installed from there onto new hard drive.Just prior to the error I had tried to run a install for devolo homeplug ethernet monitor. This did not install. Have now got latest updates this morning. But so far cannot reproduce. So it co
