The reason being I was quiting with the X window close button.
If you quit with xchat>quit or ctrl q it then saves any changed

Well seeing as this laptop is not my main machine and for the sake of it

Opened synaptic and brought up the 5 broken packages and marked them for
removal one by one starting at the bottom,

This is still not fixed /usr/bin/canberra-gtk-play is not looking in
/usr/share/sounds/ubuntu/stereo/ it is still looking in
/usr/share/sounds/.
Post #4 is spot on copying the file over fixes this but this needs to
corrected in the canberra-gtk-play source.
Strangely
64 bit 11.04 just had same as post #4.
Evolution was minimised into unity launcher.

Evolution throws up various GConf error dialogs

11.10 64 bit using default firefox and adobe 9.4 plugin.
Opening pdf's gets a black screen.
Closing and reopening Firefox gets the pdf to show.

Bit confusing this. I reversed the changes to the system. Then double
checked /etc/default/grub.
This line was commented out, I must have done this I guess at some time.
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
However I was seeing a plain aubergine background for 20 secs then text
very briefly
