Toms suggestion cures the flickering in totem. I changed output mode in
VLC and then the flicker was gone there too. Thank you very much for
your help tom. It's nice to be able to run awn and vlc video
simultaneously and not having to switch animations off. I hope this is
clean long-term solution.

This happened while using firefox, getting the drivers (automagically
so) and having 2 Appearance windows open at the same time (yes, that
might possibly have been a stupid thing to do).

P.S Works fine for me. Also ATI card. I know this trick worked for me with
gstreamer codecs. Don't know if it helps when using medibuntu's w32codecs /
w64codecs.
