Can confirm am using 12.04 i 386. Looking at output (below) I wonder
whether I correctly added PPA although followed steps described.

It looks as if that has solved the problem. With and without
blacklisting printer now recognised and printing well albeit with
limited testing so far.

For some reason I am still unable to to the latest CUPS. I have added
your PPA to my resources list, run sudo apt-get udate and done a full
system update but the CUPS package remains at cups - 1.5.3-0ubuntu1
