Some more infos:
I installed gnome (installed ubuntu-desktop within kubuntu) and in gnome grace
works like a charm. It seems to be kde related, at least in my case (kde 4.0.4).

Same problem here. I'd like to add that the program works as super-user
("sudo xmgrace").
