same issue here using Gutsy Studio (RT Kernel) all updates installed error
message appearance is randomly and the error is gone when I close the current
session and log in again.
Gutsy was a clean install from Beta and have all Updates upgrade to Studio was
done 3 days ago

I have the same issue with 2nd or 3rd User will be not able to enable
3D Desktop effects. (Gutsy with all updates)
The first logged on User can use all effects without any problem.
Using ATI Radeon mobilty 7500 with 32 MB

I found a solution which worked for me and I hope it will help others

The issue seems to be linked to old configuration files of Feisty the
programs involved are alacarte and ubuntustudio 0.5

I tried even to reconfigure however XORG, however it did not bring any
changes
I will attach also /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old since this file is may more
important since it have the original changes of the install of the
update xserver-xorg-video-ati 1:6.7.195-1ubuntu1

Hm, got the build extracted it went back to the site to check the
changes and just wonder now why this site is off line ??
I will wait with installation since I'm not sure if there is might

I just did the install and a small improvement the Desktop took place.
The Desktop came for approx 3mm down and is nearly fitting to the LCD screen.
At the bottom is still a black line of approx 2mm, from the upperTaskbar are
the 2mm missing.

today I found a new file online xserver-xorg-video-
ati_6.7.195-1ubuntu1tja2_i386.deb and this one solved the issue with the
screen, it is now fitting well again to the lcd panel.

Same issue here on a SONY VAIO PCG GRZ 615M equipped with a synaptic touchpad.

alacarte have not resolved the issue.
Alacarte is currently not starting up as well anymore.

I wonder if my issue is linked to it too, I cannot install 9.10 alternate
edition ( Unbuntu and Ubuntustudio)
The installer stops at follwing stage => no disk found =>I have than the option
to select a driver manually!
Now I wonder which driver should be used=> any advise here how to check

I think I suffer on the same issue, the only way for me to get sound is
to open the terminal and to execute this:
sudo alsa force-reload
afterwards I get the sound, Everything is working than correctly, only
the internal microphone volume have to be adjusted.
