I also had the same issue and followed the steps proposed by antipode to
solve the issue. I also had make sure I had GCC and Make and all
dependencies.

After multiple attempts to get the upgrade to work from 7.10 to 8.04 and
finally getting it only to run into a hanging update manager, I
formatted the harddrive and started with a fresh install. I have been
able to reinstall most of the environment I had for Ruby development;
however, I do continu
I have the exact same problem. I've tried from the update manager and
from the alternate CD (burned from the iso). It just locks after a few
seconds while in the first stage.

I select a particular artist or album so that the list of songs is
filtered and begin playing the songs. After playing the first song,
Rhythmbox locks up. Normally, one song after another would play until
the entire filtered list of songs play
I entirely agree with comment #2. I should be able to tie my word
wrapping setting to a file type. It's a pain having to manipulate this
as frequently as I do.
