At the time I didn't think I was doing anything to override compiz
checks. Again, it was a stock installation of Lucid and the display
problems showed up before I'd added/changed anything at all.
I have since added the xorg-edgers PPA, and in fact I am now able to use
the full width of both screen

Actually, it's not yet included in the release - I still have the very
same trouble in with the same setup in Maverick. I suppose that would be
a new bug.
For the time being, rather than use xorg-edgers, I'm sticking to a
single monitor.
