Since my original bug is that all forms of file transfer fail (both
applet and nautilus-send-to), people who only have send-to failures need
to file a separate bug.

As best I can tell, the current line:
iptables -L -n -v --line-numbers | grep "TCPMSS.*$PPP_IFACE.*clamp" |
cut -f1 -d " " | xargs -n1 -r iptables -D FORWARD
will still exhibit incorrect behaviour, that is, it will delete rule 1,
thus renumbering all the rules, and then delete an unrelated rule 2
The error about "POSIX syntax" is fixed by the attached patch. This then
uncovers a new error though:
Sun Nov 2 09:28:10 2008|error [29454]: Can't use an undefined value as
a SCALAR reference at /usr/sbin/apt-cacher line 1255.

Yes I am positive. Same laptop, same USB Bluetooth dongle, and it fails
with two separate Nokia phones, both of which worked with Hardy.
The USB device is being recognised: the Bluetooth icon appears in my
panel, and the following in syslog when I plug it in:
Oct 23 08:40:04 gertrude kernel: [ 95
I do not have other Bluetooth devices aside from the two phones tested.

As regards the "device" "working" with Bluetooth, I am not quite sure
which device you mean or what would count as working.
Assuming you meant the phone, it appears on "hcitool scan":
