I changed the BIOS setting from AHCI to ATA and now I can boot Ubuntu
and there is no Emask exceptions in the syslog. This works for me right
now but shouldn't AHCI work?

We had these problems with VMware ESX and a JeOS/Ubuntu Server
installation. Everything worked fine but after some kernel update, the
new initramfs was written beyond the 1024th cylinder and grub failed
(and this was inside a VM, so there's no BIOS update which could fix
this; shame on you VMware!)

My preferred way would be to let the update-initramfs check that all
files are in the first 1024 cylinders of the disk. Maybe it could move
out-of-boundary-files more to the beginning of the drive using some

I can confirm this problem with a fresh install of Intrepid alpha-5
(amd64, NetInst), using a Wacom Bamboo Fun Medium. Moving the pointer
works out-of-the-box, touching the pad causes the mouse pointer to
freeze. Adding the wacom-InputDevice(s) to xorg.conf (see attached file)

Currently using daily build (karmic-alternate-i386.iso) from 2009-07-11
+ latest updates. Hardware is an Asus Eee Box B202 with Intel 945GMS
chipset and Samsung SyncMaster 2233BW. Screen resolution is limited to
1024x768 even though the attached monitor supports up to 1680x105
I stumbled over this workaround while trying to install ubuntu netbook
remix via USB. As modules.dep i used one from a standard desktop
installation (same kernel version).

Just wanted to add that for me (Jaunty, all updates as of today) X/GDM
won't start correctly if the tablet is plugged in. Also I got X crashing
when trying to start a new console (Terminator) while the tablet is
plugged in. And yes, unplugging the tablet also hangs and then restarts
X.

Forgot to add: I'm using an Aiptek SlimTablet 600U (Model WCK-C121) and
have NOT installed xserver-xorg-input-aiptek but xserver-xorg-input-
wacom (the tablet also uses the "wacom" kernel module). The problem

enabled, I see the gray stripes. When disabled, I see my desktop but see

This is a "clean install" of Ubuntu karmic, meaning that I have done no

Today's update/build (2009-07-15) fixed the problem. After installing
today's updates and a subsequent reboot the resolution went back to
normal. Afterwards installed current build to confirm, the resolution is
fine here as well. I suspect this is due to the updated kernel image

It is an Ubuntu (packaging) problem - any chance to update to GDAL 1.6.x as
suggested above?
If not, something needs to be backported from GDAL 1.6 to 1.5.
