Any device is /dev/sdb goes slowly and when it works the system is

The same bug is on all kernel compiled with gcc 4.1.x (No ubuntu bug so)
I tried:
Debian 4.0 Etch - kernel 2.6.17-2 compiled with gcc 4.1.2 BUGGED
Mandriva 2007 - kernel 2.6.17 compiled with gcc 4.1.1 BUGGED
Ubuntu 6.10 Edgy - kernel 2.6.17 compiled with gcc 4.1.2 BUGGED
and:
Knoppix 5.10 - ke
I must make amends, gcc-4.1 is not liable at all.
Just I run the wrong kernel, sorry.
I tried again and again and i have seen that this problem appears on kernel
2.6.17.2 and higher, instead with 2.6.17.1 and lower all works fine.
As I compiled them with gcc-4.0 as I compiled them with gcc-4.1.
Experiencing this issue with TeXstudio on Ubuntu 16.04. The workaround
mentioned in #14 appears to work while we wait for a fix. Thank you all
for working on this.

Not sure how changing this would affect situations where it is necessary

Confirming this bug on Ubuntu 16.04, update-manager version 1:16.04.3.
The GUI hangs (greys out) for several seconds / a few minutes when
