Samba had been running OK, but since this happened today, (possibly after
trying to configure a printer with CUPS?) i can no longer login without hacking:
/etc/pam.d/common-auth and commenting out:

Several upgrades have since failed but no reports generated.

Only occurs when using kernels 3.2.0-38-generic or above, and when virtualbox
modules are loaded at shutdown time.
shutdown -r & -h both hang, but not always. I'd say it was intermittent,but
this description seems to be deprecated.
