I'm having the same problem with ubuntu 8.10 and cups 1.3.9
I defined a remote cups server via the /etc/cups/client.conf
When my laptop is not connected to the network and I try to open a
printing dialog, the application freezes for about 1 minute. I tried
with different applications. Also the /S

I updated cups to version 1.3.9-2ubuntu9 and it works for me now. But
I'm still using intrepid.
