I have exactly the same problem. Pygmy, PyMPD and anything else that
seems to use the same form of trayicon integration for the gnome-panel
have the same issues. =\

it. I'm pretty sure you can use XML to do it and if not you can use a
graphic...

If so that is a functionality that gdm should have. This is definitely
something worth giving a go at pushing upstream and I'm pretty sure the
gdm chaps would like it. :)
