So it got much worse after 4.2.0-30-generic, the most stable of the
kernels I have installed is 4.2.0-27-generic. I will try reinstalling
the 4.2.0-25-generic and see how it performs.

Attempt to login to ubuntu system and it fails, it shows the background but
nothing else. Troubleshooting led me to look at .xsession-errors which pointed
at upstart. Attempt to use upstart-udev-bridge on it's on and it says:

Unity greeter depends on upstart, ubuntu-desktop depends on unity-
greeter, and unity depends on unity-greeter. Upstart causes all sorts of
issues in a modern system that is running systemd, search the bug
tracker for " Could not connect to Upstart: Failed to connect to socket
The issue seems to be in upstart. It appears that whatever is calling it
tries to call upstart-udev-bridge which cannot connect to
/com/ubuntu/upstart and so no desktop is displayed. Removing upstart
solves it but is a bad fix because unity still requires upstart for some
silly reason.

Using wipefs you can see that it has the remnants of btrfs on the raw
/dev/sda because I am an idiot.
