Whilst upgrading to edgy the gui froze whilst installing proftpd, the system
rebooted with a broken edgy install.
When I try to load the gnome environment the screen freezes on the loading bar,
no icons are displayed. If I load a failsafe gnome desktop it loads with a

I have loaded KDE and added a new user, this user loads gnome without
any problem. The initial problems with the original user remain.
