On booting the live cd, the machine goes thru the boot process then hangs at a
blank screen.
(btw so does fedora 10)
on fedora this completed to the point where one of my other monitors (alt-F7
for example) had a text login scree

distros use x86_64 ) but whatever..
the casper.log file complains that its unable to find a live file system..
but isn't it supposed to use some of the 2G ram for this ?
Guess I can try the 32bit distro?
Ah this seems to be a duplicate of the SATA drive 64bit issue..

booting with all_generic_ide was a workaround.. you might want to make this a
fallback option for the live cd's..

I've spent the last 2 days updating this old box from 7.04 to 7.10 ( had to use
alternate CD )
then to 8.04 and finally updated to 8.10..
but at the end of this update, apparently the new 2.6.27 kernel did NOT get
installed...

so sound does not work etc..
there is no
OK that gives me a system that works fine when I do startx after logging in,
but X fails to start due to lack of mouse and pointer ..
I think I saw that bug already reported..

so this ultimately was fixed by
sudo apt-get install gdm
--
which apparently had not been reinstalled when I finally got the kernel
upgraded..

Any thing ELSE I should check for and re-install? compviz ?
(ATI RADEON graphics card.. )

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in
it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try
with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD image
