I can confirm this bug. Ubuntu 13.10 kernel 3.11.0-15-generic, GNOME
nautilus 3.8.2.
I can shrink my colums as I like but there is a maximum size so very
long column entries (e.g. long filenames) can never be displayed fully.
It is very unnerving and a change for the worse from the old behavior.
This is quite an old bug indeed.
The system in question was upgraded to ubuntu 13.04 or 13.10 (don't remember
exactly) which resulted in a black screen when X was supposed to have started
and an unusable system. I did not investigate this deeply but instead did a
fresh install of Xubuntu 13.10,
This problem is no longer present in ubuntu 13.10, both the live usb
environment and a fresh installation work.

Oneric from live usb doesn't work because X won't start (open /dev/fb0 fails,
then no screens found). If I 'rmmod poulsbo' from the cli, X subsequently will
start, but it uses VESA.

My two lucid (LTS- long term support) systems now display recent reboots.
I suspect the kernel upgrade that was released end august 2012, but I an not
sure.
During the time of the reboot, the system was doing calculations in and
atd/cron job.

I'm having the same problem. I killed -9 g-s-d and restarted it with
--debug. After the restart it's not using 100% cpu now, but it kept
giving "(gnome-settings-daemon:31887): libappindicator-CRITICAL **:
app_indicator_set_label: assertion `IS_APP_INDICATOR (self)' failed"
about twice per second,
O, and also dconf-service was doing lots of I/O at the same time. Not
sure if it is related, but lots of dconf activity and g-s-d spinning
happened before and the red hat bug mentions it as well.

I'm having the same problem. I'm trying to install Ubuntu 11.10 from the
alternate iso by USB stick. I'm using a normal harddisk with a btrfs
root, and an ext4 on LVM /home, but no LUKS.
The install fails at 'Select and install software'. Inspection of syslog
shows that linux-headers-3.0.0-12-gene
I restarted the install due to bug #774217, and changed the root
partition from btrfs to ext4. This time the same install iso on the same
system ran without a problem, so it's definately something triggered by
btrfs and not ext4.
While still attempting to install on btrfs, I also ran into this e

pops up a notification that it needs the password while it has been
running just fine for some time. When I switch to it facebook is
connected and works as it should.

I had the same problem, Amd64 ubuntu 11.10 installed from scratch.
compiz --replace fixes it, but compiz still takes some 25% of cpu.

I've been running it on production machine for a while, and I've noticed that
DAC stops working from time to time. Eg. it works fine for 8 hours and than all
