Here is a very simple scenario to reproduce it on my box (lucid) ...
Single monitor setup, reproducible whatever the theme (ambiance,
radiance, new wave), using metacity and not compiz of course.

With up-to-date karmic, creating a sametime account in empathy still
results in a "New (Null) account" so this is certainly NOT fixed.
After filling up the correct server/port, it connects correctly though,
so this is a mere display issue.
