It turns out that I may have misunderstood - the same thing happens for
me when telling MATE Tweak that I want to use Compiz rather than Marco
as my window manager.
The switch to Compiz certainly happens (I am reminded of why I stopped
using it..) and it is sticky between reboots.

Upgrading to the Nvidia driver 180.06 direct from Nvidia's web site
fixed this problem for me. I can now logout and switch users without
problem.
P.s. Tried it with and without desktop effects enabled and it seems to
work in all cases.

During the process of verifying some code in the synaptic.c that looks
questionable, I stumbled upon the fact that if I uninstalled the
xserver-xorg-input-synaptics package, my Alps touchpad on my Del

In this instance I was attempting to follow the instruction by
attempting to colour code my folders. Having selected a folder and
followed the instruction of dragging the desired colour to the folder
it completely populated the background

The sources for open-vm-tools in question are version 2009.01.21
according to that post.

The abovementioned patch does NOT fix this problem on a 32-bit guest I'm
working on. This is with the same version of the module source package.
With that patch applied, I get the following:

Attempted a build under Jaunty using the latest (1.0.3 from upstream)
tarball's bundled debian/ directory. Once deps were installed, the
package built cleanly and installed without any issues. Will now have
to test to make sure the program actually works.

I am seeing precisely this problem. The culprit in my case was a Cairo
clock with the seconds hand displayed. With that displayed on an
otherwise blank desktop, CPU use is negligible. If I then switch to
another user (without the clock), one CPU stays pegged at 100%. Removing
the Cairo clock from t
