added MATE desktop and removed all Unity applications and the problem
was resolved, with exactly the same daily usage schema. I enjoy Unity
but needed a usefull machine. Now my average memory usage is 22% out of
4GB (867MB) includ
Same here with ubuntu unity 16.04 with 4 GB on a macbook 4,1 = 1.9GB ram
and 1GB cache after 10 minutes running Chromium with only one tab.

Solved the problem following these instructions:
This must be done on both the boot command line and in the module
configuration.
/etc/default/grub:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="nomodeset"
/etc/modprobe.d/radeon-kms.conf
options radeon modeset=0
In other words, as root, edit the file /etc/default/grub b
I have the same problem with ATI Radeon X1200 128MB-319MB and x86_64 on
Ubuntu 10.4
Has someone found a work around? This is quite a problem I installed LTS to
have a more stable life...
