I had the same problem with Ubuntu 9.04 and a linksys wireless adapter.
The workaround above works for me, as well (Thanks!). For the Linksys
WMP54G the module name changes to:
sudo rmmod rt61pci && sudo modprobe rt61pci
Not sure if it matters, but the connection uses WEP 40/128.

This worked like a charm. I had found something like this in another post
(maybe yours) when I was using a broadcom wireless card and blindly copied
the setting into a file named madwifi, as it was named in the post, and it
also worked. I didn't know what the module name represented and I guess I

If by "right side desktop icons" you mean the clock, shutdown gear icon,
etc., in the top status bar, the workaround I use is gnome. On the login
screen you can change your windows manager to gnome or gnome-flashback.
It could be that when you first login you're still stuck with the ubuntu
default.

I'm wondering if this is a Python issue. Under 13.04 I needed Python 3

So I reinstalled Python 2 and played with the symbolic links so that
both 2 and 3 would work. While it looks like both Python 2 and 3 are

Tom,
If you are experiencing the problem 100% of the time, then the bug
you're seeing is likely 1253693. I opened that bug report several months
ago. It's still unresolved. I just posted some work-arounds to that
thread.
