I can confirm this bug while trying to compile gcc 4.6 on a standard
ubuntu installation. Creating the symbolic link /usr/include/asm solves
the problem.

2) enter alsamixer, auto-muted was enabled

I have the exact same problem desbribed by comment rixoff:
In on terminal, run gedit. Nothing will happen. Then, in a second
terminal, run gedit again. Now a window pops up.
