I had the same problem as described here. Using xserver-xorg-video-intel
- 2:2.5.1-1ubuntu5~intrepid from https://edge.launchpad.net/~intel-gfx-
testing/+archive as Bryce Harrington recommended to test solved the
problem.
I also tried the older version 2.4.3, but the problem persists there.

Ehm, sorry. Apparantly I didn't have time to test properly. The problem
REMAINS with 2.5.1.
I also tried with the Jaunty alpha 2 livecd, but graphics was completely
garbled and behaving very weirdly, so I never go as far as actually
testing video playback.

Video playback now works fine for me aswell (in KDE) with the Jaunty
alpha 4 livecd. Of course, I had to enable UXA to work around bug
#304871, and that brings with it its own set of problems, but I guess
that's another story.

The problems started taking place after upgrading from Feisty to Gutsy on a
Toshiba Tecra A2 laptop with an Intel 855GM graphics card. Every hour or so, X
will gobble up 99% CPU time, and be completely frozen, and the computer must be

problem still suspected to remain in Hardy, and is a test still needed?

I tried with the Hardy Alpha 2 CD today, and I can confirm that the
version of xserver-xorg-video-intel (2:2.2.0-1ubuntu1) used there does
NOT fix the problem. I get the exact same symptoms - flickering screen
as if the refresh rate were set incredibly low - as I did in Gutsy

If more testing material is desired, I came across the PDF file [1],
which also crashes Okular when poppler is patched as above. Evince is
again unaffected. Again, if the poppler patches are reverted, Okular
behaves correctly.
