Reproduce Steps:
0. Login ubuntu 17.10 using Wayland
1. Open Gvim
2. Move Gvim window to partially out of current desktop
3. Press i to change current mode to insert mode <- problem
4. Input some chars and new lines
5. Press ESC to return to normal mode
6. Press j or k to move

Had the same problem and at the moment I worked around it by downgrading
to linux-image-3.2.0-60-generic. Of course this is not a permanent
solution, especially since I probably can not do the long expected
upgrade from 12.04 to 14.04 until this is fixed.

Don't know if I should rather open another bug for this, but I still have the
problem with an up-to-date Ubuntu 12.04 - but only with users that are defined
