Compiz did work fine on my laptop (Sony Vaio sz4mn) until recently when I
switched off dektop effects (to test netbeans).
When trying to re-enable them, gnome-appearance-properties states that "Desktop
effects could not be enabled".

Hi think the dkms package won't work with recent versions of the kernel
(Intrepid). The development seems to have moved to a user space driver,
so it would be nice if we could package it...
I don't know how to do it, I think one have to play with udev and such
to trigger driver loading.
Nickolay Shmyrev (Evince developper) recently submitted a "quick and
dirty" patch to this specific problem.

For example the famous 'Nirvana MTV Unplugged in New York' (so nothing

The problem was found by the gnome people: I had my library location set
to '/home/franck/Musique', while it should have been
'file:///home/franck/Musique'.

Totally uninstalling and cleaning configurations of all compiz related
stuff, then reinstalling compiz solved the issue for me...
I had a stuff in
~/.config/compiz
~/.compiz
gconf
After reinstalling, ~/.compiz didn't reappear...

I have solved the issue:
Metacity had compositing-manager set to true (I don't know why as I
don't remember having enabled it, but I am not sure). This was
conflicting with compiz.
Setting it to false (gconf-editor) re-enabled compiz and desktop-
effects.

I am using kernel package 2.6.27-2-generic in Intrepid (latest) and have
the same problem: after resume from suspend, keyboard and mouse don't
respond when asked for my password. Only way out I found was "hard" shut
down...

Didn't know either what this app is supposed to do, but googling says it a tool

I am trying to figure out how to "define a new type in
/usr/share/X11/xkb/types/extra that does the same thing as the current type
used for the space key with right-ctrl hardcoded instead of using iso_level5".
Current type used for the space key is EIGHT_LEVEL, as defined in
"level4n" in symbols/
